Day 1 – Welcome to Whisky Country
Kick off your trip with a visit to the Glen Grant Distillery in Rothes. Take a tour of this historic site, learning about its unique whisky production process, and stroll through the stunning Glen Grant Gardens. The beautifully landscaped grounds, complete with vibrant blooms, wooden bridges, and a cascading waterfall, offer a serene start to your adventure. Speyburn Distillery is also located just outside of Rothes and offers a exclusive behind-the-scenes distillery tour and tasting.
In the afternoon, head over to Craigellachie to visit the Speyside Cooperage, the only cooperage in the UK with a visitor center. Watch skilled artisans craft and repair whisky barrels while learning about this essential part of the whisky-making process.
End your day with a hearty dinner at the Copper Dog Pub in the Craigellachie Hotel. Enjoy locally-sourced dishes in a cosy setting and sample some of the region’s finest whiskies before retiring for the night at the Craigellachie Hotel or the Highlander Inn.
Day 2 – Outdoor Adventures and History
Start your day with a hike up Ben Aigan, a moderately challenging 5-mile trail with rewarding panoramic views of the Moray coastline. The trailhead is just a short drive from Craigellachie and is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the area’s natural beauty.
After your hike, explore the historic ruins of Rothes Castle. Although only a small portion of the structure remains, the site is steeped in history and offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past.
Take a leisurely afternoon stroll along the River Spey. The circular walk around Rothes is particularly picturesque, offering serene riverside views and plenty of photo opportunities.
For dinner, return to Rothes and enjoy a meal at one of the town’s delightful restaurants. Consider staying in the luxurious Rothes Glen, a stunning exclusive-use castle offering unparalleled Highland hospitality, or the charming Seafield Arms Hotel for a more traditional experience.
Day 3 – Scenic Walks and Nearby Outings
On your final day, dive into the history of Craigellachie Bridge, designed by the famed civil engineer Thomas Telford. This iconic iron bridge is not only a feat of engineering but also offers stunning views of the River Spey and the surrounding landscapes.
Next, take a section of the Speyside Way, which runs through Craigellachie. This well-maintained long-distance path is ideal for walkers and cyclists, with breathtaking scenery at every turn.
