Day 1: Lighthouse Adventures and Coastal Dining
Our adventure began with a first: touring and staying overnight at the Covesea Lighthouse. Climbing over 120 stairs to the top, we were rewarded with spectacular 360° views. The stories shared by our guide brought the history of lighthouse keepers to life, including their heroic six-night hand-cranking feat when equipment failed.
Staying in the lighthouse quarters added magic to our experience. The sunset over the beach was breathtaking, and exploring the nearby caves made it feel like our own private paradise. After a relaxing walk along the beach at Lossiemouth, where we admired the soft sand and peaceful surroundings, we headed for dinner.
For dinner, we dined at The Salt Cellar, a cosy restaurant nestled in a stone cave. With its warm ambiance and delicious dishes, it was the perfect end to an unforgettable day.
Day 2: Castles, History and Arboreal Wonders
We kicked off the day with a visit to Duffus Castle, where the juxtaposition of its historic stonework against the lush green landscape was stunning. A local shared a touching story about her mother living there during the war, adding a deeply personal layer to the experience.
Next, we made our way to the Kula Coffee Hut at Duffus Castle for a quick breakfast. which provided a delightful taste of Scotland to our morning. Alexa enjoyed her first taste of the vegan jammie dodger and Rory had his first go at haggis. Alexa had tea, Rory had coffee, and both were introduced to IrnBru which apparently is “more Scottish than Scotland”, according to our barista, Gemma.
Afterward, we headed to Burghead Pictish Fort, where the ancient past came alive through our guide’s stories. The fort’s unique location provided breathtaking marine views on both sides of the land- where we also saw two archaeological digs in process. We even spotted a curious seal, thanks to a friendly local.
Lunch at the Cable Café offered treats like Speculoos muffins and a cosy vibe to refuel before heading to the Burgie House Arboretum where we met Hamish, the passionate curator, whose energy and stories made this stop unforgettable. The rare trees and microclimate of the arboretum offered an unexpected sense of awe and serenity.
Then, we took a tour of Burgie House, a stunning historic estate, where we learned more about Hamish and his family who lived there and the impressive history tied to the house. The architecture, grounds, and interiors provided a glimpse into Scotland’s past, rounding off an unforgettable day.
We then checked into Burgie Woodland Lodges before heading for dinner at The Crown and Anchor Inn in Findhorn. The vegan and gluten-free options impressed us, but the highlight was the traditional Cullen Skink, a rich and flavorful fish chowder that hit the spot. We then rested our heads at the Burgie Woodland Lodges, which are a modern haven in a private, tranquil setting, offering the perfect blend of comfort and nature for a peaceful retreat – hot tub included!
Day 3: Thrills, Cuisine and Reflecting on Scottish Charm
Our morning began with a delicious breakfast at Brodie Countryfare. We were greeted with warmth and hospitality as we enjoyed fresh, local fare. Rory went for the full Scottish breakfast—haggis and all. Alexa opted for a delicious green smoothie and the Vegan Scottish breakfast, which included vegan haggis (and she actually loved it! Although, we’re still debating if it counts as truly Scottish without the meat… but we’ll keep that little secret between us!).
Afterward, we embarked on a private tour of Brodie Castle, a historic gem that offers an immersive look into Scotland’s rich heritage. The castle’s stunning grounds and captivating history made it an unforgettable stop. Our guide, Jamie, took us through the castle, and we highly recommend booking a tour with him. Not only did we discover the fascinating history of the house, but Jamie also shared incredible insights into Scotland’s broader history, making the experience even more enriching.
Next, we ventured to Logie Steading for lunch, a quaint spot where we dined surrounded by unique shops and lovely scenery, just a short drive from Ace Adventures. The Café at Logie Steading offered a cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, beautiful, colorful local dishes with added flare – perfect for a relaxing meal after our exciting morning. It was the ideal place to recharge before our next adventure.
The afternoon brought adrenaline at Ace Adventures where we braved river tubing, cliff jumping, and swimming in a river known for its Level 5 rapids. Our guides, Cameron and David, ensured safety and fun throughout. The stunning natural landscapes provided a perfect backdrop for the thrilling adventure.
Dinner at The Old Mill Inn was a gastronomic delight. Rory enjoyed perfectly aged venison steak, while Alexa’s customised vegetarian dish was tailored to perfection. We ended the meal with sticky toffee pudding, so now we are REALLY Scottish at this point! Our food was great our entire visit, but The Hearth at The Old Mill Inn stole the show.
Back at the Burgie Woodland Lodges, we enjoyed one last soak in the hot tub, reflecting on the incredible adventures and peaceful moments Moray Speyside had offered us.
