Overview
During 2021, Elgin Museum is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays only, 11am – 3pm (last entry 2.30pm). If you have visited us before, you will notice some changes to the visitor experience. These measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of visitors and our Volunteer workforce in response to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Without these changes to the visitor experience, we would not be able to open to visitors, so we hope you will be understanding of the ‘new’ Elgin Museum! Full details of these measures can be found on our website.
You can still also explore the museum virtually – visit our website to find fun family-friendly activities, find and follow us on social media and visit our YouTube Channel to explore the museum’s collections and displays.
Elgin Museum is Scotland’s oldest continuously independent museum, founded in 1836. The Museum’s collections are housed in an Italianate-style Category A listed building at the east end of Elgin High Street. Here you can see objects from all over the world, with a special focus on Moray, and from all periods of history and prehistory from before the dinosaurs to the present day.
On our website you can find out more about the Museum, its changing exhibitions, as well as details of family events, activities and lectures. The Museum can also offer school visits, and has resources for heritage and collections research. You can even hire our beautiful building as a venue for weddings, corporate events, parties and more!
Highlights of the permanent displays include our Recognised collection of local fossils, the largest Pictish and Early Medieval carved stone collection in Moray, and “People and Place” which tells the story of the last 1000 years of Moray.
Annually, we have new exhibitions from the Museum’s collection as well as a number of art exhibitions by local artists.
Admission to the Museum is free, but donations are most welcome.
Elgin Museum is owned and managed by the membership organisation, The Moray Society, and is run almost entirely by volunteers. New members and volunteers are always welcomed, to help support the Museum’s activities and the service it provides to the community.
