“Colour is not a physical reality; it is the reality of what is in the painter’s mind” Henri Matisse.

To begin with, an objective approach will be encouraged where participants will take care to work observationally, building up a knowledge of the head and how to create a likeness of the sitter on a large scale.

As the workshop progresses, a more passionate and individually expressive approach to painting will be developed. This will happen naturally as students use the oil paint more and more vigorously as an unrestrained record of their own process. Colour, composition, mark-making, texture, and viscosity, will be looked at, as well as a number of artists as guiding lights such as Van Gogh, Chaim Soutine, Lovis Corinth, Oskar Kokoschka, Lucian Freud, Tai Shan Schierenberg, Benon Lutaaya and Jenny Saville amongst others.
